The National Grid Electricity System Operator (NG ESO) needs battery storage to dynamically manage the UK’s energy system in real-time, especially when electricity demand dramatically and unexpectedly increases or when renewable sources are limited.
Our batteries across five sites in England reduce the risk of power cuts by automatically increasing or decreasing their output to ensure that the system frequency remains safe, reliable and consistent.
Our current operational capacity is 120MWh which is growing with an additional 300MWh – and will become one of Europe’s largest battery portfolios – to support the UK’s energy demand.
Overview of our 420MWh battery fleet:
- One of the most significant fleets in the UK
- Powering over 1 million UK homes for 1 hour
- Supplying approximately 5% of UK installed capacity
