We operate in an industry that relies on having a competent and qualified workforce to deliver, and we believe apprentices are fundamental to our future success. Our focus on investing in apprentices earned us the Apprenticeship Employer of the Year award at the 2024 NEPIC Industry Awards as well as the Training and Apprenticeships award at the 2024 Tees Business Awards.
Central to our vision and aspirations is our policy of providing career opportunities that allow apprentices at Sembcorp Energy UK to flourish and develop to their full potential. Our apprenticeship programmes are an important pillar within the Sembcorp group’s wider training programme, giving people on-the-job training and the chance to learn directly from their colleagues in the workplace.
Fundamentally, we believe that continuous learning and development enables our employees to hone the right skills and be suitably prepared to face the challenges that can rise in an ever-changing industry. Our grow our own philosophy underpins the fact that more than a third of our current shift operations team are former apprentices and many managers – up to a senior level – started as apprentices at Sembcorp.
We offer apprentice sponsorship in a wide variety of areas including:
• Electrical • Instrument & Control • Mechanical • Information Technology • Laboratory • Business support functions
We support our apprentices not only with the baseline requirements, we also ensure that they are fully trained and competent in many other HSEQ-related areas, including technical training such as spill kit, working at height, and also specialist technical training, such as Optalign and MJI10.
We evaluate our programme on the results, whether it be in terms of professional qualifications and/or continued progression. We sponsor our apprentices to complete their apprenticeship (Level 3 and 4 apprenticeships) and we also sponsor them to complete a Higher National Certificate qualification in their chosen field.
We took on 13 apprentices in 2023, making 35 people in total currently completing an apprenticeship with us. In 2023 alone we also sponsored 27 former apprentices to complete HNCs and sponsored a further eight employees with degree courses.
