The story of Sembcorp’s evolution began in the mid-1990s when the Singapore government created Jurong Island (JI) as an offshore energy and chemicals hub through land reclamation. As Singapore attracted multinational companies to set up operations on JI, these companies required specialised utilities - an opportunity for Sembcorp to build and operate centralised facilities as a third-party provider.

Working with the Economic Development Board (EDB) and Tractebel, we built our first facilities, including Sembcorp Utilities and Terminals, to support JI’s tenants efficiently.

Over the years, we have expanded our product offerings, building key assets and developing strong partnerships beyond Jurong Island.

As Singapore’s first water reclamation provider, we have built up expertise in the treatment of multiple streams of industrial wastewater. Today, we embed sustainability in our water resources management by integrating water supply, wastewater treatment and water reclamation. In 2010, we completed the Sembcorp NEWater Plant, one of the largest water reclamation plants in the world.

We entered the renewable energy sector in 2016 and has since, grown our solar business exponentially to become the largest green power provider in Singapore, with 1.1GWp of gross solar capacity across more than 4,400 sites in Singapore.

In 2022, we launched a new carbon management business GoNetZero™, a digital platform using blockchain technology that offers businesses one-stop access to renewable energy certificates, carbon credits and environmental attribute portfolio management.

In 2023, we launched the Sembcorp Energy Storage System (ESS), Southeast Asia’s largest ESS. Commissioned in six months, the utility-scale ESS has a maximum storage capacity of 326MWh, meeting the electricity needs of around 24,000 four-room HDB households for one day in a single discharge.

In November 2024, we completed the acquisition of a 30% stake in Senoko Energy, one of Singapore’s largest electricity suppliers, to capture new growth opportunities and support the nation’s energy transition.

In March 2025, we signed a 25-year renewable energy purchase agreement with Malkoha Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of Meta Platforms, Inc., to build, own and operate a 150MWp floating solar farm on Kranji Reservoir. Once completed, it will be the largest floating solar project in Singapore. This system will supply renewable energy for Meta’s regional operations, including its data centres in the country.

In June 2025, we acquired an additional 20% stake in Senoko Energy, bringing our effective stake to 50%, reinforcing our commitment to supporting Singapore’s energy security and delivering reliable, sustainable solutions for customers and the nation.

In September 2025, we were named the winning bidder by Public Utilities Board (PUB), Singapore’s National Water Agency, to build an 86MWp floating solar farm on Pandan Reservoir. This marks our third floating solar project in Singapore, solidifying our position as Singapore's leading solar farm developer.
