Realising a Sustainable and Resilient Energy Future

Construction for a new multi-utilities centre on Jurong Island will begin this year. When completed in 2026, it will supply power, steam, firewater and demineralised water to customers. The facility includes a new 600MW hydrogen-ready power plant, as we make another stride towards using low-carbon alternatives for power generation.

The turnkey contract for the power plant’s development was awarded to the consortium of Mitsubishi Power Asia Pacific and Jurong Engineering Limited. Witnessing the presentation ceremony of the EPC Contract and Long-term Service Agreement on 18 May 2023 was Ms Low Yen Ling, Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Culture, Community and Youth.

Speaking at the ceremony, MOS Low said:

“Even as we meet today’s system demands, we need to be prepared for the future. For the power sector, this would mean getting ready for the adoption of low-carbon energy fuels such as hydrogen. I am glad to learn that Sembcorp’s power plant, which will run primarily on natural gas as a start, will have the capability to operate on fuels with 30% hydrogen content.”

This power plant will be one of the first Combined Cycle Gas Turbines (CCGTs) to be established in Singapore since 2016. MOS Low further remarked that CCGTs will still play an important role in providing the baseload energy supply to Singapore’s power system.
