Nurturing a Sustainability Workforce
April 30, 2021
We are committed to nurturing a future-ready sustainability workforce in Singapore.
In 2020, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Institute of Technical Education to jointly develop staff capability and design environmental sustainability related training programmes for students.
A key thrust in our partnership to strengthening Singapore's talent pool is the establishment of the ITE-Sembcorp Centre for Sustainable Solutions at ITE College East, which opened on 30 April 2021.
“Sustainability is our business at Sembcorp. We believe it is important to build a sustainable ecosystem as part of our wider support for Singapore’s Green Plan 2030. This ecosystem includes enabling skills training for the workforce to take on green jobs,” said Mr Koh Chiap Khiong, CEO, Singapore and Southeast Asia, Sembcorp Industries.
The centre is the first-of-its-kind integrated sustainable solutions training centre for students and adult learners in Institutes of Higher Learning, with an emphasis on photovoltaic (PV) systems. Under the partnership, we offer solar internships to ITE students, with further opportunities to be offered in due course across other environmental solutions such as water and waste management.
"Partners such as Sembcorp play crucial roles in providing authentic work experices for our students to apply the skills learnt in the classroom, through industry attachments," said Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman, Minister, Prime Minister’s Office, and Second Minister for Education at the opening of the centre. Dr Maliki added that the centre would provide students with the necessary skills to work in the sustainable technologies sector, where 55,000 jobs are expected to be added over the next 10 years.
A similar centre will be set up in ITE College West.
